Overview

Hecla Mining, a U.S. metal mining company, contracted a web development studio, which in turn hired me as a freelance UI/UX designer.

Our mission was to design a browser app for mine workers at the Lucky Friday silver mine in Idaho, focusing on managing internal processes such as material production, quality control, equipment maintenance, worker alerts, and more.

I contributed to the app’s design from the ground up, involved in every stage of development—from establishing the core architecture and navigation to crafting the visual design.

Responsibilities

• Developing app architecture, user flows, and general navigation;
• Building interface optimized for use on iPads and laptops;
• Creating UI concepts, layouts, and prototypes;
• Organizing UI components library for developers;
• Participating in the full-cycle development process, from creating wireframes to delivering final UI assets.

Process

The development team provided a structured outline of entities, roles, and features, which served as the foundation for my work. I began by designing the app’s architecture, navigation, and key user journeys.

Once the structure was in place, we moved on to the detailed UI for each module. I established a clean and intuitive visual style early on, making it easy to implement and maintain. This style guide and component library were shared with the dev team to ensure consistency as we progressed through development sprints.

We prioritized core features first, then expanded to more specific sections. I presented the designs via Zoom, Loom, or static reviews depending on complexity, and delivered the developer-ready design assets.

App functionality

Result

We successfully delivered a centralized tool that streamlined a range of internal operations. Thanks to prior experience with similar apps, the team moved quickly and efficiently.

My role was key in defining the app’s architecture, designing intuitive UI layouts, and creating a cohesive visual system. The project was both challenging and rewarding, deepening my skills in interface design, system thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
