Internal app designed for the workers of the silver mine.

Overview

Hecla Mining, a U.S. metal mining company, contracted a web development studio, which in turn hired me as a freelance UI/UX designer.

Our mission was to design a browser app for mine workers at the Lucky Friday silver mine in Idaho, focusing on managing internal processes such as material production, quality control, equipment maintenance, worker alerts, and more.

I contributed to the app’s design from the ground up, involved in every stage of development—from establishing the core architecture and navigation to crafting the visual design.

Responsibilities

• Developing the app’s architecture, user journeys, and navigation;
• Designing the interface for each app section, optimized for use on iPads and laptops;
• Creating UI concepts, layouts, and a cohesive visual design style;
• Delivering UI components and a styles library for developers to build further app sections;
• Participating in the full development process, from wireframes to final UI assets.

Process

The development team provided a structured outline of entities, roles, and features, which served as the foundation for my work. I started by designing the overall app architecture, navigation, and user journeys.

After setting up these key elements, we moved on to the detailed UI for each module. I focused on creating a clean, intuitive visual design style early in the process, ensuring that it was both functional and easy to implement. This style guide and component library were shared with the development team, aligning our efforts as we moved through each development sprint. We tackled the app’s core features first, then gradually expanded to the more specific sections.

To keep everyone on the same page, I regularly presented the UI layouts through Zoom calls, Loom videos, or image reviews, depending on the complexity of the module. I designed the interfaces in Sketch and delivered the assets to the developers via Zeplin, streamlining the handoff process.

Result

In the end, our team succeeded in creating a centralized tool that brought together a wide range of internal operations. Drawing from our prior experience on similar projects, we were able to move quickly and efficiently.

My role was crucial in defining the app’s architecture, crafting the interface layouts, and developing a cohesive visual style that tied everything together. This project was both challenging and rewarding, significantly sharpening my skills in interface design and collaboration.
