Browser app for internal operations for a stone mining company

Overview

Werner Corporation, a California-based mining company focused on stone and construction aggregate production, hired me as a freelance UI & UX designer through a US-based web development studio to help rebuild their outdated browser app. This custom tool is essential for monitoring the company's internal processes, including material production, quality control, logistics, equipment maintenance, and human resources.

As a UI & UX designer, I played a key role in rethinking the app’s interface throughout the entire development process — from redesigning the app architecture, navigation, and user journeys, to creating a new visual design style and organizing a UI component library for React JS.

Responsibilities

• Research of the existing UI and presenting improvement ideas to the development team;
• Redesign of the app architecture, navigation, and user experience for optimal functionality;
• Development of a cohesive visual design style and organizing a UI component library for React JS;
• Creating new UI layouts and delivering design assets for further development;
• Working closely with the dev team to optimize user journeys and improve user experience of the app.

Process

Upon joining the project, I was granted access to the existing app as a test user, the relevant Trello board, and product documentation, including a strategy document outlining my upcoming tasks.

I began by researching the existing app to identify areas for improvement in user experience and presented a concept for app architecture, navigation, and user journeys. Once the concept for the navigation module and dashboard was approved, I proceeded with development the visual design style for the app.

I also compiled a library of styles and components for the front-end developer to use as building blocks for the app’s modules. Throughout each milestone of the development process I collaborated with developers, from presenting concepts to delivering design documentation and final design assets. I shared my ideas with the team through Zoom presentations, video previews, and clickable prototypes.

App functionality

The app was designed to meet the specific needs of Werner Corporation, including:

• Monitoring material production and quality control;
• Tracking plant equipment and vehicles;
• Planning equipment inspections and repairs;
• Managing employee data

Result

Our team has successfully built a centralized, comprehensive browser app that streamlined internal operations and allowed for real-time monitoring and statistical analysis of various company processes.

On a personal level, this project gave me a challenging and rewarding experience, allowing me to engage in every stage of the full-cycle development process, which greatly enhanced my skills as an interface designer. Following the successful completion of this project, I was rehired by the same studio for a similar project.
